In the words of the late Mr. Rajsingh Dungarpur, P. J. Hindu Gymkhana is truly “The Temple of Indian Cricket.” For decades, we have upheld a proud tradition of excellence in the sport, nurturing talent, fostering sportsmanship, and maintaining one of the finest cricketing standards in Mumbai.
Over the years, the Gymkhana has produced many legendary cricketers who have brought glory to both India and Mumbai, including Vijay Merchant, Vinoo Mankad, Bapu Nadkarni, S. G. Shinde, Eknath Solkar, Ashok Mankad, Umesh Kulkarni, and Karsan Ghavri. These icons have carried forward the Gymkhana’s legacy on national and international stages.
Our Gymkhana proudly fields two competitive teams — ‘A’ Team and ‘B’ Team — both known for their consistency and sporting spirit. The A Team regularly participates in prestigious Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) tournaments such as:
We also initiated the Vijay Merchant Single Wicket Cricket Tournament in 1970, in memory of the late Shri Vijay Merchant. Recognized by the MCA, this tournament has seen participation from numerous national and international players over the years.
Notably, P. J. Hindu Gymkhana is among the few clubs that provide year-round practice nets for its cricketers, encouraging continuous development and training.
Established in 1941, the L. R. Tersi Memorial Cricket Coaching Scheme was India’s first-ever structured cricket coaching initiative for school boys — offering free mass coaching and making cricket accessible to all.
The Gymkhana has been privileged to engage some of India’s most eminent coaches under this scheme, including H. J. Vajifdar, Vinoo Mankad, L. B. Kenny, Vasant Amladi, Vasu Paranjpe, Eknath Solkar, R. V. Acharekar, Vidya Paradkar, Kiran Ashar, Umesh Kulkarni, and Sharad Hazare.
Many young boys from this coaching program have gone on to represent Mumbai in first-class cricket, and some have proudly donned the Indian jersey at the international level.
